East Kilbride boss Stevie Aitken agrees contract, sets sights on title charge

East Kilbride boss Stevie Aitken says agreeing a new contract for next season was a formality and talks were held just to make sure he and the club were 'still on the same hymn sheet'.

Now he's got that out of the way, the Kilby boss is fully focused on making sure his side are ready for a tilt at the Lowland League title and, hopefully, promotion to League Two.

Aitken says he hasn't yet spoken to all his players - midfielder Paul Paton only finished up his loan spell with Airdrie last weekend - but has agreed deals with others and has them training once a week ahead of their mid-June return to the full pre-season programme.

He said: "The contract is all done and dusted.

"I had a good chat with the owners, I said there were no issues at all, I just basically wanted to confirm that we're still on the same hymn sheet, which we are, and which I'm delighted about.

"We're working on pressing ahead and recruiting for the new season and we'll be back training in a few weeks, so I'm looking forward to getting going again.

"I've enjoyed it, I think the players enjoyed it, even though it was a short season, and they can see now what the club's about, especially the players we've attracted from the senior ranks.

Midfielder Paul Paton is set to return from a loan spell at League One side Airdrie (SNS Group)

"It's disappointing that we couldn't finish off the season, but we'll give it a go this season again."

Aitken added: "We're excited to go again, we look forward to it. There has been a lot of hard work going on over the last three or four weeks, getting the players identified, speaking to players, speaking to agents, speaking to managers - it has been a busy time.

"The next two or three weeks will be the same, but we're just looking forward to getting back in and looking forward to the season.

"We've offered contracts and some have been agreed - though we can't announce that yet - but we've got good deals done with players.

"We still have a lot of work to do and players to speak to, but it's coming along fine and it's exciting.

"The players are back in once a week for training, which is good.

"They're doing their own training, we'll monitor that and officially start back in the middle of June, so it's all exciting stuff."
