East Kilbride boss: Plenty of room for improvement after thrashing Gretna

Stevie Aitken insists there's more to come from his East Kilbride side after they thrashed Gretna 6-1 last night to go top of the Lowland League.

A Steven Old double, an own goal plus efforts from Darren Smith, Ricky Miller and Daryl Healy made it back-to-back wins for Kilby after an opening day triumph with 10 men at Stirling Uni.

But their gaffer reckons they could have had even more and warned they are still well off their best.

Aitken said: "Last night I was really impressed with the way we played.

"Could we have scored more goals? Yeah, I think we could've and some of the football was really good.

"I never get too carried away when we win games and I don't get too concerned when we lose games.

"Certainly Saturday was good to get the league off and running with three points, but we made things difficult for ourselves.

"Last night we changed the shape a wee bit, we freshened things up as well and I thought we looked more like how we want to be.

"We've still got a wee bit to go, there was a bit of slackness, but we are only two games into the season.

"These things take time, but we are delighted with the win and to score six goals.

"This is where we want to be at this stage of the season.

"We want to be up there challenging.

"We were a long way away from Kelty Hearts last season [31 points] and we want to try and bridge that gap and, if we do that, hopefully we can challenge them.

"But it's two games, so we'll rest up and try and get another three points on Saturday."

Daryl Healy climbed off the bench once again to net for East Kilbride, following up on his acrobatic effort against Stirling.

The former Berwick striker missed much of pre-season due to injury and is still to get up to full fitness.

And Aitken said: "I'm delighted with Daryl.

"We've been patient with him. He's eager to kick-on and so are we, but he's not played a lot of football at all and we have to be careful with him.

"And if we do that I'm sure he'll get the benefit of that as well."

The visit of Gala Fairydean Rovers is up next for the K-Park side.

Gala claimed their first win last night with a 3-2 victory over Dalbeattie Star, but Kilby will be aiming to pick up where they left off against Gretna.

"You want to try and get momentum as soon as you can," said Aitken.

"There's a lot of games coming up and you want to start on the front foot.

"All we can do is look after ourselves.

"It's another game at home and we'll have some players back from injury.

"Paul Paton missed last night because he'd picked up a wee knock he's been nursing for a couple of weeks.

"Steven Old got game time and it's about building on what we've done.

"There's a long way to go, but if we show the same appetite and desire we've shown in the last two games then I'm sure we won't be far away come the end of the season."

Kick-off on Saturday is 3pm and the game will be played behind closed doors.
