East Kilbride boss not getting carried away after Kilby end Kelty's 26-game unbeaten run

East Kilbride boss Stevie Aitken insists he isn't getting carried away after they ended Kelty Hearts' staggering 26-game unbeaten run.

Kelty had won 24 and drew two games before Kilby came calling this afternoon, but Aitken says it was just another win in the bag after going two points clear of nearest challengers BSC Glasgow at the top of the table and four clear of Kelty, having played a game more.

Hearts last lost over a year ago when Cumbernauld Colts beat them 2-1 at Broadwood in August 2019.

Kyle Wilkie's second half strike was the difference in Fife as Kilby edged past the defending champions at New Central Park.

It was a significant moment as EK earned their first win over Kelty in four meetings and, with their fifth clean sheet on the spin, put down a marker in their title bid.

But Aitken said: "It's one game, there's a long way to go and there's going to be twists and turns.

"They are a good side and you can see that when they put us under a lot of pressure late on.

"Nothing is won at this stage of the season, it's three points and that's all it is at this stage of the season."

However, Aitken was thrilled to see his side get one over on their rivals after asking his players to match Barry Ferguson's side.

He added: "We've come to the team who won it last year by a big margin and they team who will be up there challenging, probably the team to beat, packed with experienced players.

"I asked the guys to go toe-to-toe with them today and I thought they did that.

"I thought Darren Smith was outstanding, he ran his guts out for the team and that was the catalyst for us going forward.

"Everyone, to a man, was terrific and that's another clean sheet.

"I thought we showed quality when we had the ball and I'm delighted with the win, but it's only one game."

East Kilbride travel to Dalbeattie Star in midweek and Aitken said: "We've got another big game on Wednesday and we need to make sure we are ready for it."
