East Kilbride boss hails hero goalkeeper after fourth clean sheet in a row

Stevie Aitken hailed Kilby keeper Conor Brennan after a late penalty save in the win over Spartans earned the club their fourth clean sheet on the spin.

The East Kilbride gaffer ended a tricky week with three points on Halloween after a 2-0 win over Spartans.

That came off the back of a hard-fought 1-0 win over Berwick last Saturday and 0-0 draw with East Stirlingshire last Wednesday night.

Second half goals from Paul Woods and Steven Bell delivered the win over Spartans on a day they could have scored more.

But Aitken was full of praise for his No.1 after the former Dumbarton goalkeeper capped a great display between the sticks with a spot-kick save from Spartans substitute Archie Meekinson.

He said: “We are still trying to find our feet a bit still, we’ve been a bit rusty in front of goal and not been clinical enough.

“But Conor Brennan has been outstanding for us.

“He had a terrific penalty save late on and he’s been brilliant for us this season.

"That’s four clean sheets in a row he’s got now.

“He’s a very good goalkeeper, he works very hard in training and he deserves the clean sheets for that.

“I’ve been impressed with how he’s played and I’m delighted for him.

“We were always in control and on top in the game, but the longer the game goes your opponents grow in confidence and Conor has been great for us.”

Kilby were without Lewis Kidd for the clash, as he is self-isolating for 14 days, but Steven Bell returned after his fortnight in isolation came to an end after a co-worker had tested positive.

After a tight first half, Kilby got the breakthrough when Bell fed Chris Erskine and his pass was fired home first-time by Woods after 62 minutes.

Ten minutes later EK sealed it when Darren Smith nodded Jordan Armstrong’s cross back across goal and Bell finished from close range.

Meekinson was upended in the box in the final minute, but Brennan saved superbly to keep his penalty out.

Aitken added: “It’s been a decent week for us. We’ve had a lot of issues in terms of injuries and Covid problems, so we are happy to take seven points from nine.”
