East Kilbride badminton star sport involvement joy after Special Olympics honor

East Kilbride badminton star Diane Gillan says it was great to be involved in a sporting activity again as she took part in the Special Olympics Global Virtual Torch Run.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run international executive council hosted the inaugural Global Virtual Torch Run 5k to show support for Special Olympics athletes.

Diane, from the Whitehills area, heard that they would be taking a torch past the Hydro in Glasgow and was thrilled to be asked to take part.

She said: “I followed the Law Enforcement Torch Run on Facebook and saw that there was going to be a Virtual Torch Run and I was invited to take part.

“The event went well, I met the Scottish Law Enforcement team at the Hydro in Glasgow and we were filmed doing the Torch Run as we ran past the Hydro.

“It was great to be a part of it because it brought back memories of when I carried the Olympic torch in 2012, so that was good, because it has been a terrible year for everyone.”

Diane admits she has no idea when she will be back playing badminton, but has been kept busy during lockdown, caring for others.

She said: “I have been training at home every day and I have been kept busy and fit at the Share Alike foodbank charity in East Kilbride, so I am ready to get back on the badminton court, which I hope is soon, as I am missing all of my friends and playing the game.”

Diane hopes to be fit enough to go for gold at the 2021 Special Olympics in Liverpool, and will represent the West of Scotland in her sixth Special Olympics.
