East Kilbride appoint Stevie Aitken and Rangers legend Ian Durrant as new management team

Lowland League outfit East Kilbride have appointed Stevie Aitken and Ian Durrant as their new management team.

Former Dumbarton boss Aitken and Rangers legend Durrant will be unveiled by the club tomorrow.

Aitken and Durrant - who last worked together at the Sons in 2018 - have beaten the likes of former Scotland international Gary Naysmith, former Irvine Meadow boss Brian McGinty and Kilby caretaker boss David Proctor, the former Inverness defender, to the position.

It's understood to have been a very close call between Aitken and Naysmith and a final decision has only been made in the last few hours.

Aitken's brother Chris will also be part of the coaching setup.

Kilby have been without a permanent manager since November last year and the duo succeed Stuart Malcolm, after he quit the club to join League One Forfar Athletic.

Aitken - who we first linked to the job by Lanarkshire Live Sport when Malcolm quit in November - confirmed his interest in the position back in March.

He said at the time: "I'm a manager who has had a wee break, looking to get back in and East Kilbride is a job that would interest someone like myself.

"I'd be interested like any other manager that has put their name into the hat.

"I've heard a lot of names mentioned with it and high calibre managers, so that shows you what people think of it.

"It's a club that has a lot of ambition to go forward."

Aitken was lauded for his achievement in keeping part-time Dumbarton in the Scottish Championship during his first two seasons at the Rock.

But at the end of the 2017/18 campaign, the side were relegated to League One after a play-off defeat to Alloa.

Now he will be tasked with getting East Kilbride out of the Lowland League and into the SPFL.

After Malcolm quit, Jim Paterson was put in caretaker charge, but he resigned when the club made it clear he would not be getting the job on a permanent basis and David Proctor took the reins until the Covid-19 shutdown came into force.
