East Kilbride ace Craig Malcolm happy to hand Paul Paton captain's armband

Craig Malcolm insists he has no issue giving up the Kilby captaincy to Paul Paton this season – and admits he has plenty to learn from the club’s more experienced stars.

The East Kilbride striker has skippered the side since 2018 when he took over from Barry Russell during Brian Kerr's reign.

But former Dundee United and Partick Thistle midfielder Paton has been handed the armband by boss Stevie Aitken for this season.

With Kilby landing some big signings this summer, Malcolm was not surprised to see the role passed on for this campaign.

The 33-year-old e said: “The manager had a conversation with me before the season started and it’s something that’s not a big deal to me, to be honest.

“There’s plenty of guys who have come in with a lot more experience and have played at a higher level than I have, so even at my age I can still learn off these guys. Hopefully they give us that bit extra to get over the line that we’ve lacked in the last few years.”

Kilby head to Berwick Rangers on Saturday looking to maintain their 100 per cent start to the season, following wins over Gala Fairydean and Gretna as well as a late victory over Stirling Uni on the opening day with 10 men.

Malcolm, who netted twice in a 3-0 win over Gala, added: “I think Berwick is going to be another game like Stirling, where we will have to roll our sleeves up and get stuck in.

“We’ve showed already we are capable of winning both ways and if we need to battle for the win, we can do that. It’s probably going to be one of those games where you’ll be happy to take a 1-0 and get out of there with the three points.

“It’s not the best of parks [Shielfield] at the best of times and I think the forecast is pretty miserable, so it will be difficult.”
