East Fulton Primary School and Nursery top of the class after glowing report

A primary school is top of the class thanks to a glowing review by inspectors.

Education Scotland has rated East Fulton Primary and Nursery, in Linwood, as ‘good’ across four key categories in a report published this week.

The Gilmartin Road school was commended for learning, teaching and assessment in both primary and nursery, raising attainment and achievement and securing children’s progress.

Inspectors highlighted the supportive and nurturing climate, innovative approaches in reading and numeracy and the positive influence of staff as its three main strengths.

The report says: “Children respond well to the purposeful ethos, demonstrating commendable courtesy, enjoying their learning and developing a keen awareness of the qualities of responsible citizenship.”

It also said children’s enthusiasm for reading and numeracy confirmed ‘the effectiveness of the school’s strategies for improvement’.

Staff were praised for contributing to improvements in both the nursery and primary.

The report adds: “Staff show significant commitment to professional learning, responding to the positive role models provided by the headteacher and promoted staff.

“Their high expectations and positive encouragement drive improvements in the school’s performance.”

Education Scotland recommended the school continued with its planned improvements to learning, teaching and assessment to raise children’s attainment across the nursery and primary.

It also encouraged staff to proceed with plans to develop high quality outdoor learning and continue to improve the overall consistency of children’s learning experiences.

No more follow-up visits are planned by Education Scotland following the inspection, which was completed in February of this year.

The report says this was because inspectors are “confident” the school has the capacity to improve.

Renfrewshire Council will inform parents and carers about the school’s progress as part of its arrangements for reporting on the quality of its schools.
