East end councillor claims Westminster 'still listening to Scotland' after Tory MP's Glasgow visit

An east end councillor claims Westminster is still listening to constituents following a visit from the Minister for Pensions and Financial Inclusion.

MP Guy Opperman and Councillor Thomas Kerr visited the Tollcross Advice and Learning Centre as well as Shettleston Men’s Shed, both voluntary organisations which help members of the community get their life back on track.

Tollcross Advice and Learning Centre provides help for older people to use technology, in financial difficulties and has many other organisations based within the one building.

While visiting Mr Kerr and Mr Opperman met Veronica Telfer who runs the centre which is funded by Tollcross Housing Association.

They also visited Shettleston Men’s Shed to see the work being done in there to help older people socialise and talk about mental health difficulties they may be facing.

Run by chairman Willie Smillie, the group provides an opportunity for older people who may feel isolated and alone to learn new skills and meet new people.

Commenting on his visit, Guy Opperman, said: “It was a pleasure to be in Shettleston today with councillor Thomas Kerr, chatting to people at the Tollcross Learning and Advice Centre and the Shettleston Men’s Shed.

“These two organisations do a power of work in helping local people find new skills and prepare them for going back into the work place.

“People like Veronica Telfer and Willie Smillie are prime examples of the leadership community representatives take in their area and should be applauded by us all for the work they do.”

Councillor Thomas Kerr added: “Having Guy visit us today in Shettleston is a great boost to the East End, it shows that the UK Government is listening and cares about all corners of our United Kingdom.

“This is the second time the past few months where Guy has taken his time to visit Scotland and I am very pleased he was able to take time to drop into the best area of the UK Glasgow’s East End.

“The organisations in which we visited today are doing a tremendous amount of work in Shettleston and are just two of the amazing community facilities we have in the East End of Glasgow.

“They show the very best of my community and I’m proud of each and every one of them for the work they do.”
