East Coast Main Line blocked after fire breaks out on train between Durham and Darlington

Firefighters have been called to a blaze on board a train on the East Coast Main Line.

Fire crews were called to a service on the East Coast Main Line near Croxdale viaduct at around 10.55am after a fire broke out on board.

Passengers had to be evacuated from the service as firefighters arrived from Spennymoor and Newton Aycliffe to tackle the flames.

All lines on the East Coast Main Line are blocked between Durham and Darlington as a result with passengers experiencing delays of up to 90 minutes.

A County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: "We are currently dealing a small fire on a train on the East Coast mainline near Croxdale viaduct.

"All passengers have been evacuated safely and we have two crews from Spennymoor and Newton Aycliffe on scene, working to extinguish the fire."

A safety inspection is now taking place on board the train with National Rail confirming disruption is expected until 2pm.

Ticket acceptance is in place for passengers on alternative routes to complete their journey.

These include:

  • LNER via any reasonable route
  • East Midlands Railway between Sheffield and Derby/Nottingham/Leicester
  • Nothern via any reasonable route
  • Virgin Trains between Birmingham New Street and Edinburgh via Glasgow Central
