Launched in 2009, East Coast operates high-speed train services along the East Coast mainline, connecting London, the east Midlands, Yorkshire, the north-east of England and Scotland. Owned by Directly Operated Railways (established by the Department of Transport), East Coast runs 155 daily weekday services, carrying 18 million passengers a year. It operates 44 trains – 30 electric and 14 high-speed diesel – and has transformed the route, with increased services, improved frequency and faster journey times.
