East Chicago teacher charged with stalking student

Nov. 07--A teacher at an East Chicago high school has been charged with stalking one of his students after he sent her inappropriate text and Facebook messages, police said Friday.

Jason P. Bredesen, 37, of Merrillville, is charged with stalking the student starting about Oct. 29 and continuing at least until Tuesday, according to a release from East Chicago police. Bredesen was being held in the Lake County, Ind., jail following his arrest Friday, according to police.

Bredesen, the girl's economics teacher at East Chicago Central High School, sent the girl sexually themed messages and messages about harming his wife and the girl, according to police. After the girl had been getting them for two days, she decided on Halloween to no longer reply to them, but he kept sending them.

The girl told her mother, who told school administrators, police said. School administrators suspended Bredesen, and when police found him, he had several suicide letters and told police he had consumed several pills. He was taken to a local hospital for observation, and was arrested Friday, according to police.

Police believe Bredesen may have communicated with other students in a similar way, and are asking anyone with information to call Detective Miguel Pena at 219-391-8400, or leave an anonymous tip at 219-391-8500.
