East Calder construction traffic will be banned from using narrow lane

West Lothian Council will act to stop construction traffic using a narrow lane to access the huge Calderwood development site.

Calderwood is one of the largest building sites in the region.

Residents in Clifton Road near Overshiel Farm in East Calder have had to put up with heavy lorries and earth moving equipment using the road to access the Stirling Developments part of the Calderwood development.

In a petition to the council residents said: “It is unfair that residents must suffer heavy lorries and construction vehicles passing through constantly when there are so many  other access points.”

The residents contend the Clifton Road is not marked as an access to the building site and builders have never obtained planning permission to use it.

One local man, Paul Martin, told a meeting of West Lothian Council’s Executive said the road was used by delivery lorries, JCBs, earthmovers and concrete mixers. “It has been going on for 18 months now", he said.

Planning officers said they were aware of the problems and would take action.

Councillor Damian Timson said: ”Given the length of time this has been going on what kind of timescale are we looking at?”

He was told that the matter could be dealt with within weeks.

Councillor Lawrence Fitzpatrick, chairing the meeting said: ” I think we would all wish to see an early resolution to this problem.”
