East Belfast teenager Charlie Lindsay captains Rangers Under 16s at Istria Youth Cup

There was disappointment for East Belfast teenager Charlie Lindsay and his Rangers Under 16s teammates on Saturday as they lost out in the final of the Istria Youth Cup.

The Young Gers - who also had Derry youngster Bobby Deane on trial - fell to a 4-0 defeat to impressive Red Bull Salzburg in the showpiece decider in Croatia.

It was the final game in a tournament dubbed the ‘Future Champions League’ due to the quality of the sides participating.

Lindsay captained Rangers to victories over Benfica (3-0) and LA Galaxy (3-2) earlier in the week before they saw off Udinese 4-2 on Thursday to top Pool A.

Despite the final loss, Rangers Under 16 age group has enjoyed a big year, having won SuperCupNI and the Albim Cup.

It has also been an impressive few months for Glentoran Academy youngster Lindsay.

Last month the teenage midfielder became the Glens' youngest ever player when he came on as a second half substitute in a Co Antrim Shield win over Ballyclare Comrades.

At just 15 years, five months and 24 days old, the teenager's appearance saw him eclipse the previous record of Ethan Warnock which had stood since December 2016.

The Glentoran Academy youngster also starred as Rangers saw off Charlton Athletic to win the Junior title at the SuperCupNI .

Lindsay - who hails from the Cregagh Estate - has been guesting for Rangers ahead of a permanent move to Scotland next summer.
