East Belfast teen Charlie Lindsay helps Rangers win SuperCupNI Junior title

Rangers celebrated STATSports SuperCupNI glory on Friday night - with a little help from East Belfast teenager Charlie Lindsay.

Glentoran Academy youngster Lindsay impressed as the Light Blues saw off Charlton Athletic 2-0 at the Ballymena Showgrounds.

The 15-year-old teed up Adedire Mebude for the opening goal, with substitute Robbie Ure adding the second in injury time.

It could have been more for Rangers, with Mebude having a second half penalty saved by Charlton keeper James Beadle.

Lindsay - who hails from the Cregagh Estate - has been guesting for Rangers at the SuperCupNI ahead of a permanent move to Scotland next summer.

He was on target during the earlier group games and continued his impressive form in Friday's final.

It is Rangers' first win in the Junior section of the SuperCupNI since 1985.

They had to work for their win.

Charlton started on the front foot and in the third minute Ryan Huke found space inside the box but could only blast his shot well over the bar.

The English visitors broke with pace in the seventh minute as they went close to breaking the deadlock.

Daniel Kanu surged down the left and cross for Ryan Huke whose shot was well saved, and Tolu Ladapo followed up with a rising shot that cleared the bar.

Gers keeper Jack McConnell was called into action in the 18th minute to save from Daniel Kanu's low shot.

Despite the early pressure it was Rangers who forged ahead in the 28th minute.

Glentoran youngster Charlie Lindsay was pivotal in the build-up, playing a neat one-two on the edge of the box before threading a pass to Mebude who took a touch before drilling a low shot past James Beadle.

Rangers were awarded a penalty midway through the second half after Charlton captain Seydil Toure brought down Mebude inside the box.

Mebude dusted himself down to take the spot-kick, but his effort was well saved by Beadle who dived to his right to palm the ball away.

Rangers went close again in the 46th minute when Leyton Dunlop curled one inches wide.

Moments later Robbie Ure was sent clear but his shot was well saved by Beadle.

In the 58th minute Dunlop had another chance to settle the game, but his shot was saved by Beadle, with the rebound falling just out of reach of the onrushing Lindsay.

Ure then rattled the woodwork with a stinging drive from an acute angle as Rangers finished strongly.

Ure soon got his reward with the second goal in added time.

His initial effort was saved by Beadle, but the striker followed up to force the ball home.
