East Belfast police patrols increased to deal with issues including underage drinking

Police in East Belfast have upped police patrols over a rise in issues including underage drinking.

Inspector Pete Cunningham urged parents to "be aware of where their children are and what they are doing" following reports of anti-social behaviour in areas including Connswater Greenway, Orangefield and in and around Ormeau Park.

He said on Saturday evening that while not all youth groups in the area in these areas are misbehaving, some elements have burned bins, damaged parked cars and created problems on main roads.

He said : "We are noticing an increase in anti-social behaviour involving youth in the areas of Ormeau park and surrounding area, Connswater Greenway and Orangefield.

"Whilst not all youth in groups we engage with are involved, elements within are involved in behaviour which includes underage consumption of alcohol (putting themselves at risk & increasing likelihood of risk taking behaviour), burning of bins, damage to parked vehicles, and creating issues on main roads.

"Our ask is for parents to be aware of where your children are and what they are doing, as well as advising around implications of getting caught up in any of this behaviour.

"We have increased patrols in these areas so please continue to report any incidents in your area, so we can engage with those involved.

"Thank you for your assistance around this issue."
