East Belfast murals: Artist speaks out after second piece vandalised

A mural of playwright and poet Samuel Beckett has been vandalised in East Belfast.

The artwork on the Belmont Road was vandalised over the weekend, a few weeks after a mural of civil rights activist Maya Angelou was defaced with racist graffiti.

Both murals, which were created by artist Glen Molloy, are part of a series of pieces promoting positivity in East Belfast, which also includes a piece dedicated to world champion kickboxer Billy Murray.

Speaking to Belfast Live, Glen said that he had just finished painting the Samuel Beckett mural on Sunday, before discovering one day later the image of the former Campbell College teacher and the accompanying words had been covered in white paint.

Glen said: "The Samuel Beckett mural is part of a series of positive pieces that I have been doing around East Belfast in order to brighten up the area.

"It is very disappointing to see that just a day after I had finished painting it, that someone has come down and vandalised it.

"This is only weeks after the painting of Maya Angelou was ruined by racists.

"I cannot understand who would do something like this, given the connection that Samuel Beckett has in the area being a former teacher at Campbell College who has done so much good.

"I am not sure what the motive is behind this attack, but I know that the local community are against it."

East Belfast Alliance councillor Michelle Kelly condemned the vandalism and said the local community had enjoyed the positive and upbeat message promoted in the mural.

She said: "I am devastated to see that the mural has been vandalised.

"It was already a real talking point in the area with a hugely positive and upbeat message. I know the artist was working hard to repair his Maya Angelou piece which had been defaced weeks ago - for this to happen as well is just awful, what does such mindless vandalism achieve?

"I wholeheartedly condemn this, hope the artist knows how much his work was appreciated by local residents and that it can be restored."
