East Belfast group helping with Afghan refugee appeal to redistribute overflow items to local organisations

A group based in East Belfast have said they will be redistributing excess items from a refugee clothing appeal to local groups who need it.

Another World Belfast have been helping Haru and Care4Calais with their appeal in aid of Afghan refugees arriving in the UK.

The not-for-profit group originally offered to help with sorting their toiletry items, however, soon helped with wider work as they were overwhelmed with donations.

As a result, second-hand clothing start-up Haru have closed their Portview Trade Centre premises to drop-ins, but Another World have revealed they will be accepting donations from today (Tuesday, August 24) at their overflow warehouse.

Speaking to Belfast Live, Becky Bellamy from the group said the Haru appeal was "absolutely overwhelmed" with support and they were happy to help.

She continued: "We originally offered to sort their toiletries for them but when we got there it became apparent they needed some help.

"The containers arranged for Calais will be massively exceeded so we are redistributing the excess to local organisations that support those experiencing homelessness and hardship as well as local refugees and asylum seekers."

Now that Another World have secured extra storage space, they are looking for volunteers to help with sorting items.

Becky added: "We have been given free storage space to sort and store the donations by Xtra Space self storage in East Belfast and will need volunteer help to sort the items into useful bundles.

"We also need vans to ferry the stuff between locations."

Donations that are most needed currently include coats, jogging bottoms or jeans, trainers, hoodies, and t-shirts.

The group's new storage space in East Belfast is open from 10 am to 5 pm for any donations.
