East Belfast crash leaves four needing hospital treatment

Four people have been taken to hospital following a collision in East Belfast.

Emergency services were called to the two vehicle crash on the Upper Newtownards Road at the junction of Rosepark just before 5pm on Monday. The road was closed until almost 10pm.

It is understood one casualty had to be cut from a vehicle by firefighters before they and three others were taken to hospital for treatment.

A PSNI spokesperson said on Monday evening: "Motorists are advised to avoid the Upper Newtownards Road area of East Belfast following a road traffic collision.

"The road is closed at the junction of Rosepark and is expected to be closed for some time.

"Drivers are advised to avoid the area and seek an alternative route."

Firefighters were also called to the scene of the incident.

Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service Group Commander David Nichol told Belfast Live: "We attended a two vehicle road traffic collision on the Upper Newtownards Road this evening where we assisted the NIAS [Northern Ireland Ambulance Service] with four casualties.

"One was removed from a vehicle using hydraulic cutting gear before the four casualties were taken by ambulance to hospital."
