East Belfast crash involved police car and BMW

A crash on Monday that left four people needing hospital treatment involved a police car and BMW.

Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service told Belfast Live earlier this evening that one person had to be cut from a vehicle following the collision at the junction of Rosepark on the Upper Newtownards Road.

Four people were then taken to hospital by Northern Ireland Ambulance Service.

The PSNI has since said the crash involved both a police car and a BMW that was being driven by a member of the public.

A police spokesperson said: "The Upper Newtownards Road in East Belfast has reopened following a road traffic collision earlier this evening (Monday, May 31).

"Shortly before 4.30pm this afternoon, a police vehicle was involved in a two vehicle road traffic collision on the Upper Newtownards Road.

"The driver of the police vehicle was responding to an emergency when there was a collision with a BMW, being driven by a member of the public.

"Four people have been taken to hospital for treatment of their injuries which are not believed to be life threatening at this time.

"Enquiries are underway to establish what occurred and anyone who witnessed the collision, or who may have captured it on their dash cam, is asked to call police on the non emergency number on 101, quoting reference number 1558 of 31/05/21."

Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service Group Commander David Nichol told Belfast Live earlier: "We attended a two vehicle road traffic collision on the Upper Newtownards Road this evening where we assisted the NIAS [Northern Ireland Ambulance Service] with four casualties.

"One was removed from a vehicle using hydraulic cutting gear before the four casualties were taken by ambulance to hospital."

It is understood that Northern Ireland charity air ambulance also responded following the incident.
