East Ayrshire riding school left 'devastated' after two horses die in A77 horror collision

An East Ayrshire riding school has been left devastated after two loose horses were killed on the A77 today.

Morris Equestrian Centre confirmed that two of their riding school animals escaped from their base at Fenwick near Kilmarnock.

The horses died after being hit by an SUV early this morning between the Meiklewood junction and junction 8 Fenwick. There were no injuries to any people as a result of the crash.

Motorists experienced severe delays on the northbound stretch but the road has since fully reopened.

In a statement, Morris Equestrian said: "It’s with great sadness to let you know that at approximately 5.30am, two of our riding school horses were involved in a road traffic accident (RTA) on the M77.

"Both horses were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver has not been reported as having any serious injuries but was taken to hospital as a precaution.

"We are still investigating into what has caused the horses to escape. This is a devastating time for all."

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "We would like to thank drivers for their patience this morning while we dealt with this incident."
