East Ayrshire Council propose to raise council tax by almost five per cent

Residents in East Ayrshire face a maximum council tax bill increase of almost five per cent.

The proposed rise would see Band B householders forking out £49 extra annually, with Band D homeowners paying £63.

The budget is due to go in front of councillors next week and politicians will vote on the council tax proposal from officials.

An increase of exactly 4.84 per cent is the highest amount recommended by the Scottish Government.

Nearly half (44 per cent) of all East Ayrshire properties are in Band A and those residents would have to pay out an extra 81p per week.

People living in the 13,311 homes who get a council tax reduction would receive benefit rises to match the council tax increase.

The council has been dealing with a budget shortfall of about £32 million up until 2021.

Cuts for the year ahead include vacant jobs not being filled, which will save nearly £5.5m, along with other changes to services.

A council report, which will be presented to councillors at cabinet, said: “The council’s 2020-2021 budget is presented in the face of unprecedented volatility at a UK level with the nature, pace and scale of change leading to significant levels of financial uncertainty.”

  • Band A residents would pay £42 more

  • Band C residents would pay £56 more
  • Band D residents would pay £63 more
  • Band E residents would pay £83 more
  • Band F residents would pay £103 more
