East Aurora students take part in career development conference

March 21--Ten East Aurora High School students earned state-level recognition at the recent Illinois DECA Career Development Conference.

Five of those students also qualified for April's International Career Development Conference in Nashville.

Approximately 1,400 students from across the state competed in the Illinois Career Development Conference held March 11 in Rosemont.

East Aurora High School juniors Gabby Torres, Laura Guido and senior Jose Caballero earned eighth place in the Community Service Project category for their paper and presentation on Forgotten Teens Project, which raises money to purchase gifts for teens in need. This is the second consecutive year that Guido and Caballero finished in the top 10 in this category.

Additionally, the following students earned competency level scores in their categories:

--- Jennifer Chavez and Jose Caballero for Role Plays 1 2 in Buying and Merchandising

--Laura Guido for Role Play 1 in Apparel and Accessories

--Carolina Herrera for Role Plays 1 2 in Retail Merchandising

--Juana Herrera for Role Play 2 in Retail Merchandising

--Karina Herrera for Cluster Exam and Role Play 2 in Principles of Business Management

--Cindy Ramirez for Role Play 2 in Marketing Communications

--Giselle Ramirez for Cluster Exam and Role Play 2 in Marketing Communications

---Gabriela Rivera for Role Plays 1 2 in Principles of Hospitality

--Gabby Torres for Role Play 2 in Quick Serve Restaurant

Laura Guido and Gabby Torres will represent Illinois at the International Career Development Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, from April 23 to 26, as delegates to the Thrive Academy, an honor bestowed upon the chapter for their involvement in school and community.

East Aurora High School senior Juana Herrera, junior Giselle Ramirez, and freshman Gabriela Rivera previously qualified for the International Conference as part of the team that earned Gold Certification for the Paw Place school store.

East Aurora High School teacher Mark Lyons is the DECA advisor.
