Eason puts iconic O'Connell Street store up for sale for a whopping €24.5 million

Book retailer Eason has put its iconic O'Connell Street store up for sale with an asking price of a whopping €24.5m.

The building is listed for sale with agent Bannon and is being sold with a 25-year lease back to Eason with a rent of just over €1.3m a year.

The building has been owned by the popular retailer since 1886 when Charles Eason bought it from WH Smith.

Eason was manager of WH Smith at the time of the purchase.

The proposed initial rent of €1,341,500 per year would yield a net income of 5% per annum, reports the Irish Times.

The carved limestone facade of the building is listed and the agent said the interior contains “nominal features of historic relevance which would inhibit its future development capacity”.

The shop sustained extensive damage during the 1916 Rising when it was occupied by rebel forces.

It was shelled by the Helga, which was anchored in the River Liffey.

The store was rebuilt over the following three years and became one of the first structures in the city made with a reinforced concrete frame.
