An easing of conditions on the fireground on Thursday afternoon allowed the NSW Rural Fire Service to downgrade the 94,000-hectare Adaminaby complex fire to "watch and act" status.
Earlier in the day the wind velocity peaked, forcing the RFS to upgrade the fire's status to emergency level.
But that was thankfully short-lived as a light amount of rain fell and the wind eased, providing some relief for the crews on the ground.
"There was a slight bit of rain at the fireground; obviously not enough to put the fire out but certainly enough to ease conditions," RFS spokesperson Nathan Thompson said.
"We are expecting the passage of a front on Thursday evening.
"That's when we're hopeful of getting some heavy plant in and working.
"With less wind and cooler conditions, crews in the area will be able to work overnight on getting containment lines established."
