Oct. 31--Name: The Instant Volleyball Set from Hammacher Schlemmer
What it is: A volleyball set that one person can set up in about 15 minutes, unless you have to use the water bags as ballast, in which case you'll need five to 10 more minutes. Two people can set the thing up more quickly because a couple of maneuvers are easier with four hands. The net is supported by two telescoping rods that click into the base, which also is the carrying case. The net then is slipped over the ends of the rods to create supporting tension. You likely will need to use the support cords and either stakes, if you're on soil, or the water bags, if you're on a hard surface. Either works well. A ball and pump with inflation needle also are supplied.
The good: It really does go up in a hurry, and it's easy enough that you wouldn't necessarily need the directions, but follow them anyway, so you don't break something. Packed away, the kit is about the size of an alto saxophone case, and it weighs only 8 3/4 pounds, so it's easy to take on a road trip. The game would be a hoot at the beach, but it also would be a hit while picnicking or camping. It comes with Hammacher Schlemmer's lifetime guarantee.
The bad: At a smidge over 6 feet, the net is not regulation height for adult volleyball, but if it were, you probably wouldn't be schlepping it anywhere for a picnic. It's also narrower, with the net stretching about 11 feet wide. This size does, however, make even a two-person game possible. So it's all about the fun and exercise, not tournament play.
