Earthquake with preliminary 6.6 magnitude hits Crete

An earthquake with a reported magnitude of 6.6 has taken place south of the Greek island of Crete.

The US Geological Survey said the Saturday afternoon quake was centered in the Mediterranean Sea at a depth of 17 km (10.5 miles).

The nearest populated areas - the village of Nea Anatoli and the town of Ierapetra - are about 90 km (56 Miles) north, the USGS said.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

It comes just hours after a 5.5-magnitude earthquake caused damage as it hit Puerto Rico on Saturday.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude of 5.9 while the German Research Center for Geosciences in Potsdam also gave a preliminary 6.6 magnitude.

The Athens Geodynamic Institute said the quake struck about 55 km south of the city of Ierapetra.

Greece is in an earthquake-prone zone and tremors are common.
