Earthquake startles Scots town as residents report 'sharp jolts' and 'large shake'

A small Midlothian town was hit by an earthquake this morning as residents reported “sharp jolts” on the street.

The 2.5ML earthquake, which has been confirmed by the British Geological Survey, was felt just south of Edinburgh in Penicuik around 10 this morning.

People reported the feeling of “sharp jolts” and a “muffled thump” as the BGS say it was likely to have been felt by many people.

They said: “Felt by several residents in the Penicuik and Howgate area, Midlothian.

Reports described, "our house and neighbouring properties all shook", "it was like two sharp jolts" and "was like a small explosion" and "there was a large shake and a muffled thump".

One person said: “I get it actually thought something had crashed into the side of my house.”

And another commented: “I felt it too. Thought something had hit the house.”

While a third wrote: “I thought someone had kicked the back door down! Huge thud and whoosh!”

In a Tweet the Society said: “We detected an 2.5ML earthquake south of Edinburgh at 10.01 this morning, just outside Penicuik.

"We've already received a few felt reports, and given it location its likely to have been felt by quite a few people.”

Our sister title Edinburgh Live also report how a staff member at the Royal Infirmary also wrote that they had felt it at the Edinburgh hospital.
