Earthquake recorded off coast of Ireland in Irish Sea

An earthquake was detected off the coast of Ireland last night.

The seismic event was recorded happening at 9.19pm on Sunday evening around 90km northeast of Dublin, in the Irish Sea.

The magnitude 2.5 earthquake is not thought to have been felt onshore, with the Irish National Seismic Network (INSN) receiving no reports as such.

Another smaller earthquake, magnitude 1.7, happened off the coast of Blackpool in England several hours later at 6.23am.

The organisation said the Irish Sea "experiences regular events" and a similar but smaller earthquake was detected a few weeks ago on November 17.

This quake was the seventh such recorded by the INSN as happening in or near Ireland this year.

Below are the INSN's waveforms for the December 15 event, as recorded by seismometers around the country.

The INSN is operated by the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) along with the Geological Survey Ireland (GSI).

Several people were killed in the Philippines, including a six-year-old girl, as the region was struck by a 6.9 magnitude quake at the weekend.
