Following the tremors, the administration activated a Level III emergency response as Sichuan Earthquake Agency dispatched a working team to the quake-hit area to assist local authorities with emergency response efforts.

This comes almost a day after a landslide occured in the early hours of Tuesday, burying 33 people in the Nanhe township of Longnan city in Gansu province. The death toll from the landslide in northwestern China rose to 21, state media reported, following the conclusion of rescue operations at the scene.

State broadcaster CCTV reported all the people trapped were pulled out by early Wednesday, with seven of them having minor injuries. Five others were not injured, it said.

The cause of the landslide was not immediately clear.
