The earthquake occurred at 6:50:11 am IST at a depth of 122 km, the NCS said in a post on X.

"EQ of M: 4.7, On: 02/07/2026 06:50:11 IST, Lat: 38.265 N, Long: 73.342 E, Depth: 122 Km, Location: Tajikistan."

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

Earlier, on June 21, a magnitude 4.0 earthquake struck Tajikistan at a depth of 139 km.

"EQ of M: 4.0, On: 21/06/2026 06:31:09 IST, Lat: 37.245 N, Long: 72.063 E, Depth: 139 Km, Location: Tajikistan."

Tajikistan is among the most earthquake-prone countries in Central Asia because of its mountainous terrain. The country is also vulnerable to floods, droughts, avalanches, landslides and mudslides.

According to the World Bank Climate Change Knowledge Portal, climate change is worsening the country's vulnerability, with nearly 30 per cent of its glaciers projected to disappear by 2050. The changing climate, coupled with recurring natural hazards and ageing infrastructure, has increased risks to transport links, water resources and communities in remote mountain regions.
