Earthquake hits Indiana, felt in Chicago area

An earthquake hit an area in western Indiana Thursday afternoon but was also felt by some in the Chicago area.

A magnitude 3.8 quake occurred at 3:18 p.m. and was centered about 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) west of the Parke County town of Bloomingdale, Indiana, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The USGS said the quake occurred about 5 miles beneath the surface.

Residents in New Lenox, Tinley Park and Homewood in Illinois reported feeling the earthquake, according to the USGS website.

Some in southern Michigan also reported feeling the temblor.
