Don’t miss out, today is the last day to get in on this 100K offer!
Last month Chase released the much anticipated first new credit card to come out of the combined Marriott/Starwood loyalty program. The new Marriott Rewards Premier Plus Credit Card is very similar to the card it replaces, although the annual fee has been raised $10 to $95 a year. In exchange for that modest sum you get a number of great benefits, including:
- An annual free night worth up to 35,000 points after card renewal
- Automatic silver elite status, and the ability to earn gold status after spending $35,000 a year (beginning in 2019)
- 15 elite night credits beginning in 2019, limited to one per member not one per card
The new card also provides an improved earning rate for Marriott purchases (6x instead of 5x) and for everyday spending (2x instead of 1x).
The most exciting thing though is the 100,000 points sign-up bonus currently being offered, which I value at $900. You’ll earn this bonus after spending $5,000 in the first 3 months, though as has become the norm with Chase, there are some restrictions to be aware of.
The product is not available to either current cardmembers of the Marriott Rewards Premier or Marriott Rewards Premier Plus credit card, or previous cardmembers of the Marriott Rewards Premier or Marriott Rewards Premier Plus credit card who received a new cardmember bonus within the last 24 months.
If you’re a current cardholder who’s ineligible to earn this sign-up bonus, you might be targeted with an upgrade offer worth tens of thousands of points. Note that the Marriott Rewards Business Credit Card is a different product and won’t disqualify you from this sign-up bonus. Current Starwood Preferred Guest from American Express cardholders should be eligible for this product, but it does appear to be restricted by Chase’s 5/24 rule. This means that if you’ve opened 5 or more cards in the last 24 months you’ll be automatically rejected.
Here’s a comparison of earnings with the new Chase card, as well as the current and future Amex SPG offerings:
Card | Annual Fee | Marriott Earn | Everyday Earn |
Marriott Rewards Premier Plus | $95 | 6x | 2x |
SPG Luxury Credit Card (Amex) | $450 | 6x | 2x |
SPG Consumer Credit Card | $95 | 6x (effective in August) | 2x |
SPG Business Credit Card | $95 | 6x (effective in August) | 2x |
This graphic really drives home how much extra value you’re getting in exchange for the $10 increase in annual fee:

Bottom Line
It’s always exciting to see a new credit card hit the market, especially when it comes with a shiny 100,000 point sign-up bonus. We don’t know how long this current offer will last, so if you’re eligible to get this card I’d definitely apply sooner rather than later.
