Early win has Aussie aiming high at Monaco

Australian rookie Oscar Piastri's stunning start to this year's Formula 2 championship has the 20-year-old aiming high at the world-famous Monaco street circuit.

Piastri has qualified third for Saturday's feature race at the iconic circuit as he aims to back up his impressive first showing in the championship in Bahrain in March.

The Melbourne product marked his opening weekend as an F2 driver with a win in the second of three races at the Sakhir circuit and says that result has him full of confidence heading into the second stop of the campaign.

"I think we're in a good spot and I'm feeling more gelled with the car and have a bit more experience in it now," Piastri told AAP.

"We can definitely try and aim ourselves pretty high ... I don't think many people have been to Monaco in F2 before either so that's somewhat less of an advantage for the others.

"I think we can set our sights pretty high and we can be aiming to be at the front. There's no reason why we can't be."

France's Theo Pourchaire will start Saturday's race from pole position with Piastri's Prema Racing teammate Robert Shwarzman second.

It is Piastri's third time racing at Monaco having competed there in the Formula Renault Eurocup in 2018 and 2019.

The youngster also has the benefit of accessing the knowledge of ex-Formula One driver Mark Webber - a two-time Monaco grand prix winner - who is Piastri's manager.

"I'm sure over the next couple of days I'll ask him a few specific things," Piastri said.

"I've already been there twice myself.

"Obviously if Mark gives some advice I'll very happily take it from a two-time Monaco winner."

The F2 action at Monte Carlo continues on Friday night with the first of two 30-lap sprint races with the 42-lap feature race on Saturday.
