JAIPUR: Cancer survivors who won the battle against chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), a form of blood cancer, have become an inspiration for others living with the disease. World CML day was spitals where canobserved in city ho- cer survivors narrated their experience with the ailment.
“Taking proper and regular treatment is a must and losing confidence is not allowed. I discontinued treatment for a couple of years, which had deteriorated my condition. But I fought back and now I have defeated CML,” said Sandeep Jain, a resident of Beawar in Ajmer. He was working in Mumbai when he was diagnosed with cancer few years ago.
Poonam Sharma (44) almost has the same story to tell. “I have three children. When I was diagnosed with CML, I thought what will happen to my children. But my husband motivated me and we undertook the treatment. I do not have any CML symptoms,” said Sharma, is a resident of Agra who received the treatment in Jaipur.
CML is a cancer that first emerges in the blood-forming cells of the bone marrow and invades the blood. “On the basis of the current cancer registry data in the country, the cases of CML cancer are about 2.2 per cent. If CML cancer patients take their medicines regularly, then they can not only beat the cancer but also can live a healthy life like a normal person,” city-based blood cancer specialist Dr Upendra Sharma said.
