Early Slavia Prague injury blow confirmed ahead of Arsenal Europa League quarter-final

Arsenal’s Europa League quarter-final opponents Slavia Prague look set to be without goalkeeper Ondrej Kolar for the tie following a serious head injury.

The Czech club confirmed that Kolar suffered a fractured skull after being caught by the raised foot of Kemar Roofe in a bad-tempered match at Ibrox.

Roofe was sent off for the horror challenge as the Slavia stopper required lengthy treatment before being taken off on a stretcher.

Images after the match showed the extent of the gruesome injury, with Kolar sustaining deep cuts on his forehead and cheek.

"It turns out there's a small fracture,” said Slavia manager Jindrich Trpisovsky. “Football is a contact sport, but this is absolutely incomprehensible to me.

“It's unbelievable that something like this can happen at all. In a head-on collision, putting the sole in the face at full intensity…

"We can be glad that it didn't turn out even worse. But the fact that there is a fracture shows the intensity that was in the challenge."

He added: “We have a key player out for a long time. We'll see how long he comes back. It's unpleasant for the goalkeeper."

Following a 3-1 aggregate win, Slavia Prague were drawn against Arsenal in the quarter final with the first leg taking place at Emirates before the return match in the Czech capital.

However, UEFA are set to launch an investigation into the controversial match against Rangers which could see Slavia in trouble.

The Scottish side were reduced to nine men after Leon Balogun was sent off for two bookable offences and things spilled over late on when Rangers’ Glen Kamera accused Prague's Ondrej Kudela of racially abusing him.

Players from both sides also reportedly clashed in the tunnel at full time.
