Early-morning Greggs deliveries blocked after angry locals complain about sleep

Greggs gas been blocked from having 3am deliveries at a new cafe after several families complained and took their case to their local council.

The chain bakery wanted to move its planned delivery time to 3am at its newest site in Talke, North Staffordshire.

Local residents said it would jeopardise their chances of a peaceful sleep.

The bakery on this site will open from 6.30am to 7pm Monday to Saturday and 9am to 6pm on Sundays and bank holidays, Stoke on Trent Live reported.

A drive-thru Costa Coffee is set to open alongside the bakery as well.

Both units are on the site of the former Robert Coates Plant Sales on the corner of Congleton Road and Newcastle Road.

But furious families spoke out against the early morning plans at Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council's Planning Committee meeting this week.

Local councillor Kyle Robinson spoke on behalf of residents, claiming an approval would lead to statutory noise complaints.

He said: "This would be damaging for all parties in terms of the health of residents affected and the reputation of the company involved.

"Councillor Dymond and I ask you to object to the plans on the grounds that the delivery management plan is weak and not robust enough to mitigate noise that will be created by such early deliveries."

Councillor Paul Northcott suggested a compromise, he said: "Would we be able to compromise with a delivery time of 6am?"

At this point, John Middling, who can see the new Greggs over his garden fence and is 'not very happy' about the 3am plans, began to nod.

Fellow Unity Way resident Ruth Brearley addressed the meeting, she said: "During those times of the night these noises would be highly exaggerated."

Councillor Gillian Williams says she worked in a similar type bakery and would not be supporting the 3am plan.

“All they want to do is drop a load and go off to the next job”, she said of delivery drivers generally.

Councillors voted overwhelmingly to approve the 6am compromise.

Mrs Brearley cried tears of relief after thanking the committee.

Speaking after the meeting residents rejoiced at their victory.

Unity Way resident Tomasz Wojcik said: "You can hear the traffic already at 6am so it's not that bad."

Mrs Brearley added: "The world is awake by 6am."
