Several motorists were caught by gardai carrying out a checkpoint operation on a busy national road on Thursday.
The early morning stops were carried out by members of the force in Co Cavan on the N3.
The checkpoint was in place as part of Operation Teorainn and the Christmas Road Safety Campaign to encourage drivers to slow down.
A number of drivers were detected travelling well over the speed limit and may face fines.
Gardai are warning road users that similar checks will be carried out as we approach Christmas and they are urging people to be conscious of their speed.

A spokesperson for the Cavan/Monaghan region said: "Early this morning as part of Operation Teorainn and the Christmas Road Safety Campaign Cavan Roads Policing Unit were on the N3 carrying out speed checks.
"A number of motorists were detected travelling well in excess of the speed limit and Fixed Payment Notices were issued.
"There will be similar checks on the run up to Christmas so please be conscious of your speed and slow down."
