Early favourites for Wigan Athletic job according to bookmakers after John Sheridan departs for Swindon Town

Leam Richardson and Gary Caldwell are among the early favourites to become the next permanent Wigan Athletic boss.

The Latics are currently without a boss following the departure of John Sheridan.

The 56-year-old was on a short-term deal at the DW Stadium and upon its expiration has signed a deal with League One rivals Swindon Town until the end of the season.

The Robins had been without a manager themselves after previous boss Richie Wellens left to take over the reigns at League Two Salford City.

Speaking on behalf of Wigan's joint administrators regarding Sheridan's departure, Dean Watson said: “We would like to place on record our thanks to John for his efforts during the last two months and wish him well in his future career.”

Wigan's next game is due to be next Saturday in League One against Oxford United.

The Latics were originally scheduled to be in action this weekend on the road against AFC Wimbledon.

But that match has been postponed in light of positive coronavirus tests withing the Dons camp.

Following Sheridan's departure, early odds have emerged regarding who is tipped to become the next permanent Latics boss.

And according to the latest odds from BetVictor, Latics assistant boss Richardson, who has been at the club since 2017 and was previously the right hand man to former boss Paul Cook, is currently the favourite for the role.

After Cook's departure, Richardson stayed at the DW Stadium and has performed the same role under Sheridan.

Former Latics boss and player Caldwell is just behind Richardson in the early odds.

Caldwell played for Wigan between 2010 and 2015, winning the FA Cup with the club in 2013 as a player, and then oversaw promotion from League One with the Latics as a manager in the 2015/16 campaign.

Steve Cotterill, former Salford City boss Graham Alexander, Sol Campbell, Paul Ince and Nigel Adkins are also listed as among the favourites for the job.
