'Early days' for 24yo on ventilator with COVID-19, family says

The mother of a 24-year-old Canberra man on a ventilator in an intensive care unit with COVID-19 has urged people to get vaccinated.

The mother, who wished to remain anonymous, told The Canberra Times it was "early days" for her ill son.

"The family gratefully appreciates the support from family, friends, the community, ACT Health and staff in the intensive care ward," she said.

"We are very confident in the care he is receiving and our focus is on his journey and wellbeing. It is early days.

"We support the messaging of vaccination for all ages."

The young man has not been vaccinated, and does not have any underlying health conditions.

He is one of two people currently on a ventilator in the ACT with COVID-19, the other being a person in their 40s.

They are part of four people in the ICU and 13 people hospitalised with the virus. The hospitalised patients range in ages from 18 to 54.

There are now 258 active cases of the coronavirus in the ACT.

The ACT recorded 12 new cases of COVID in the 24 hours to 8pm Wednesday.

Six of the new cases are linked to known cases, while six remain under investigation.

ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr said four of the new cases were in quarantine for all their infectious period, and eight were in the community for part of their infectious period.

He warned of challenging scenarios ahead for the territory, with no easy choices, but said he was still aiming for no active cases in this outbreak.
