Christmas shoppers could face additional charges if they order from the EU this year

People looking to make an early start to their Christmas shopping may have to think twice due to new post-Brexit charges.

The unexpected ruling may catch people out this year who are looking overseas to purchase certain luxury items, such as alcohol, tobacco and some presents over £135.

Changes made on January 1 mean that some UK customers who are planning on buying gifts for friends or family from the EU will have to pay added customs charges when their goods are delivered.

Smaller items such as stocking fillers will be exempt due to the lower price and VAT will still apply on items worth over £135 but should be charged by the seller at the point of sale.

HMRC have warned that buyers should show foresight and check if the gift they are buying will be eligible for import VAT, customs duty and excise duty before they make any large order.

A spokesman said: "With 100 days until Christmas, we want to remind shoppers of the changes introduced since January so that their present-buying experience is as smooth as possible, and that online shoppers don't inadvertently get caught out by any unexpected charges".

Which? consumer rights spokesman Adam French said: Which? research found that many shoppers experienced issues when ordering online from the EU - with some people facing additional delivery or handling fees of up to £300".

This news may see people who are not careful, paying more in additional charges than they paid for the actual gift itself. It may also encourage a lot more people to buy within the UK, or think smaller this year.

French added: "We have previously called on the Government to be more upfront about the new delivery charges people will face when shopping from the EU so we are pleased to see HMRC take this advice on board in time for the festive season.

"If you are ordering presents from the EU or abroad this Christmas, make sure to check if you will be charged extra fees and read the fine print on the return policies".

Gov.uk also include a guide to possible charges as well as more information about disputing a charge, returning unwanted goods and how to get a refund on charges paid.
