
Hikers walk amid fall foliage on Mt. Kurodake in Hokkaido on Monday. The 1,984-meter peak in the Daisetsuzan mountain range is one of the first places in the country where leaves begin changing color. A local ropeway operator said trees near the summit began turning red and gold in late August, similar to an average year. However, significant differences between day and night temperatures this year mean the colors are more vibrant than usual, a company representative said. The autumn hues are spreading down the mountain to Sounkyo Onsen hot spring resort located at the foot of Mt. Kurodake and can be enjoyed until early October.
