Earl Bennett knew the 2012 Bears were ‘doomed’

Former Bears wide receiver Earl Bennett was never a superstar in his six seasons on the lakefront, but he was a quality player who added depth on the field and an insightful mind off it.

Five years after he last played a down in the NFL, Bennett now spends his time hosting his own podcast, Prostyle, a sports and hip-hop show, and analyzing the Bears and other NFL teams.

On Thursday afternoon, Bennett dropped some interesting knowledge regarding his time playing for the Bears, specifically in 2012 and 2013. Following the Aaron Rodgers-Mike McCarthy tension report from Tyler Dunne of Bleacher Report, Bennett shed some light on his own experiences with the Bears and how things were handled with the offensive coordinators and Jay Cutler.

After explaining his reasoning on why he would follow the quarterback’s lead in that scenario, Bennett then admitted one offensive coordinator’s playbook left a lot to be desired.

While he didn’t name anyone specifically (although he said it was NOT Marc Trestman), all signs point to Mike Tice and the 2012 season that resulted in his and Lovie Smith’s firing, despite a 10-6 record. Tice’s offense ended up finishing 28th in the NFL that season. Bennett actually offered Trestman some credit for having a “super cool” and “extensive” playbook. He then provided one more story for fans’ entertainment.

While stories from the early 2010s are interesting to read today, fans can breathe a sigh of relief knowing their 2019 coaching staff and players are in full lockstep, working towards building a championship-caliber team without the added drama.
