Eamonn Holmes didn’t hold back during his latest appearance on GB News, delivering a passionate and no-nonsense rant aimed squarely at Keir Starmer and Kemi Badenoch over what he sees as the misplaced priorities of politicians.
As Westminster continues to debate the post-Brexit UK-EU reset deal, Eamonn made it clear he thinks the whole thing is a waste of time. Speaking with trademark bluntness, he questioned whether the agreement was even worth the effort. “Look at this deal yesterday, would you really say it’s a day’s work? It’s absolutely laughable,” he said, clearly unimpressed by the political fanfare surrounding it.
But what got him going was something that’s long been close to his heart, animal welfare. Eamonn used the moment to steer the conversation toward what he believes are the real issues being overlooked. “The other thing that’s appalling in this country is testing on animals,” he said. “Animals confined in similar conditions. Do you know what they’re used for? The main testing is to see what effect washing up liquid has on your hands.”
That was the tipping point for the veteran broadcaster. “That is what we’re torturing them for in this country, and it’s allowed to happen,” he added, clearly disgusted.
His message for the politicians arguing over Brexit? “I say to people like Badenoch and Starmer, instead of this rubbish that you sit and talk about all day, look at relevant things. Animals are being tortured. Look at the welfare of animals. All of these things. Get a life, get a grip and sort things out rather than this nonsense and rubbish we bury our heads in.”
It’s not the first time Eamonn has spoken out about his concern for animals. He’s previously voiced regret over not adopting a vegetarian lifestyle and has often talked about the disconnection many people have from where their food comes from.
In a heartfelt interview on Saturday Night with Hayley Palmer last year, he reflected on that very issue. “We go to the supermarket and get sausages, we think they come from a packet,” he said. “We don’t realise they come from pigs or cows, we don’t realise what goes on.”
He also shared how his rescue dog had changed his life, saying: “I have never experienced affection like it – unconditional love.”
For Eamonn, while politics rages on in Parliament, it’s issues like animal welfare that truly matter – and he’s urging politicians to wake up to it.
