Eamonn Holmes slams 'morally wrong' Tory government for rejecting free meals for kids

Eamonn Holmes has slammed the government for voting against providing free school meals for children.

The TV star, 60, made a surprise appearance on This Morning on Monday to talk to Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield about the decision.

On Wednesday 322 Tory MPs voted against a Labour bid to make free school meals available during holidays for the next six months.

During his interview Eamonn called the government "morally wrong" for the decision, and urged them to "wise up".

He explained that he once would have agreed with the decision not to fund school meals outside of term time, but has changed his mind.

He said: "It's about not being judgemental, we all have views and I certainly a year ago would have been someone who said: 'Seriously you can't provide your kid with a bit of toast in morning?'"

Eamonn is on the board of the Manchester United Foundation, the team Marcus Rashford plays for.

Rashford lead the free meals campaign and has become something of a national hero over the last few months for his work helping children living in poverty or low income families.

Eamonn continued: "This is not just about child food poverty, which is disgusting, which is awful, which is immoral, this is about a government in England being behind governments doing something in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

"What a PR disaster."

Eamonn held up Monday's edition of the Daily Mirror, which has the headline: "Marcus: The Pride of Britain".

He pointed out that this will embarrass the government.

"Somebody in government in Westminster is really going to have to wise up," he said.

Eamonn added: "Not only is this tactically wrong but morally wrong and it should be put right."
