Eamonn Holmes says we pronounce Primark wrong and sparks an unexpected debate

There are many words people argue about when it comes to pronuciation.

And as it turns out, Primark is no different.

Eamonn Holmes has claimed we pronounce the name of the high-street retailer wrong and it has sparked a bit of a debate among viewers.

The This Morning presenter was on Friday's show alongside co-host and wife Ruth Langsford and they were discussing the new extended opening hours for Primark stores following the national lockdown.

They were joined by Gyles Brandreth and Nick Ferrari for the debate which features various news headlines and viral talking points.

As the segment came to an end Eamonn addressed the cameras: "Could I just make and apology to all the viewers in Ireland watching this morning, for the mispronunciation of Primark, there."

He then claimed: "You have to be Irish to know."

They were discussing Primark's 24-hour opening hours (ITV)

To which Ruth added: "This is from a former manager," but he actually was a trainee manager, Eamonn corrected his wife.

"The rest of the UK you call it Primark, we say Pree-mark, that's it, just saying," he continued.

But Ruth hit back with another debate saying: "We say swede, you say turnip," to which Eamonn argued: "I don't understand why the rest of you can't get things right, but anyway!"

In Northern Ireland, where Eamonn hails from, Primark is actually called Penny's - just to add to the confusion.

But nonetheless, viewers had their say on Twitter.

"It's PRImark! ...like FRIday, or PRIse your hands off of my bargain xmas jumper. It's Not Preemark," argued one.

Another said: "Pree-mark? Nah, mate, it's PRImark! #ThisMorning."

"Now @EamonnHolmes has done it! He's started a PREEmark-PRImark debate," a third added.

But some agreed with him.

"I worked in Swansea Primark in the late 90s, we always pronounced it the same way as Eamonn #ThisMorning," a viewer said.

And others wanted to correct him not just on the pronunciation.

One said: "#ThisMorning Primark in Ireland Is pronounced Penney's."

"Eamonn Holmes trying to start the old argument over how to pronounce Primark on #ThisMorning when coming from Ireland you'd think he'd try to tell us all it's actually called Penny's," another echoed.

What do we think? Primark or Pre-mark? You decide.
