Eamonn Holmes reveals on This Morning he almost split with Ruth Langsford

Eamonn Holmes has revealed he once tried to dump his famous wife during a row.

Viewers of TV show This Morning learned today (July 18) that Holmes and his partner Ruth Langsford came close to breaking up.

As reported by The Manchester Evening News, Holmes said: "Twenty-plus years ago, I tried to make Ruth my ex."

The pair have worked together on the ITV programme for many years.

But during Vanessa Feltz’s phone-in today, viewers became privy to a hitherto undisclosed detail about the celebrity couple's relationship.

Recalling the dramatic incident from two decades ago, Holmes told viewers: "I said, 'That's it, it's not working - goodbye'. I went to close the door and she pushed it back - and do you know what she said to me?

"'Oh, don't be stupid'."

Langsford, who explained it was their first proper disagreement, added: "And we have been rowing ever since."

During the same episode, the husband-and-wife team had a minor on-air spat about Holmes's tendency to “whitter on” and drag out segments.

Langsford criticised the Northern Irishman for talking too much during links, prompting Holmes - in a nod to the show's segment on sweating - to suggest his wife was getting too stressed and hot under the collar.

Earlier this week, Langsford cried with laughter as Holmes made a cheeky admission.

After speaking to Martin Lewis about being falsely used in an ad campaign, 59-year-old Holmes told viewers that he once had his name attached to a fake ad - for erectile dysfunction pills.

He said: "In my case, mine was brought to my attention by a doctor, who was very angry at me lending my name to this.

"The thing that gets me is, why choose me? Why should I be the face of erectile dysfunction?"
