Eamonn Holmes on feeling 'humiliated' during ongoing health battle

Eamonn Holmes has opened up on feeling 'humiliated' amid his current health battle.

The North Belfast man discussed his feelings with Kaye Adams on her How To Be 60 podcast and told how "the most awful thing" is having to be dependent on other people.

He also explained how "you can have all the money in the world and if your health goes, it’s no good to you".

Eamonn began experiencing severe back pain in recent years and underwent back surgery at the end of September 2022.

The 63-year-old later tumbled down a spiral staircase when recovering from his operation, requiring surgery on his shoulder.

Speaking on the podcast, Eamonn said: “Your health is your wealth, I mean that’s the thing I’ve noticed in the past, well, seven years.

“I had a double hip replacement seven years ago and that’s where it all started to go wrong for me.

"I mean, once your health goes... you can have all the money in the world and if your health goes, it’s no good to you.

"Mobility and to be able just to enjoy things."

He added: "My legs don’t support me at the minute. Hopefully, it'll get better and things will change, but yeah I’m envious now of people with really good health - because it’s like that or nothing.”

Also on the podcast, Kaye said to the TV presenter: “It must be a hell of a shock... because you’ve spent your entire life being able to go where you wanted, when you wanted, do what you wanted and then you know, you are inhibited in doing that."

Eamonn replied: “Yeah, you’re inhibited playing with the dog, you’re inhibited playing with your grandchild, you’re inhibited just socialising.

"And also - the most awful thing is being dependent on other people...

“Being dependent for someone to get you a cup of tea, to get something from the fridge, to pass you the TV remote controls, to bring you to the bathroom sometimes, to...

"There are so many things where it’s demoralising having to ask.

“And there’s only so many times you can say, ‘Karen, could you get me this’, 'Karen, I'm sorry to ask you this', ‘Kaye you wouldn’t hand me that would you?’ And you are dependent....

“And if Kaye decides, ‘I’m fed up handing you things, get it yourself’ or whatever, it’s very humiliating...

"You are appreciative. The other thing is loneliness.."
