Eamonn Holmes gets answers for awkward TV interview 18 years ago

David Blaine has finally told why his 2001 GMTV interview with Eamonn Holmes was deliberately awkward, 18 years after he tormented the presenter with his obtuse answers and strange, staring behaviour.

After they were reunited on screen for the first time since that car-crash segment, David admitted to Eamonn that he wanted to make the This Morning host feel awkward to make a point.

"We were all talking in the green room before the show with all the guests' friends and family," David revealed.

"I noticed no-one was watching their friends go on, so I thought, 'I'm going to make sure everyone looks''.

He went on: "I thought a card trick would be boring, it's not going to stop the people in the green room from chatting.

"At the last minute I came up with that idea and thought it was funny."

Clearly still smarting from the arduous interview nearly two decades ago, Eamonn muttered: "I'm glad one of us found it funny.

"My hair turned grey right after that. Don't you think that was wicked and cruel? It was the longest six minutes of my life."

In the 2001 interview, which was replayed on today's show, magician David answered questions monosyllabically, flashed his eye tattoo at the camera and kept staring directly at Eamonn.

The poor presenter was forced to keep asking questions to fill the dead air, trying desperately to spark a conversation between them - to no avail.

It comes after David, 46, opened up about losing three stone in three months by cutting sugar from his diet.

The illusionist has shed weight rapidly by going sugar-free, save a piece of fruit every so often.

"Sugar is my new topic of conversation - I have lost 19 kilos in last 3 months," he told Chris Evans on his Virgin Radio show.

"Normally when I diet it is quite a struggle, but I eliminated all sugar and I have no cravings for [it]. Sugar is very addictive."

He went on: "When you eliminate it all you don't crave it. It just changes the way you feel.

"I'm able to run again even though I have a torn meniscus - the doctors said I couldn't run again.

"I feel like I'm 16 years old. "
