Eamonn Holmes defends Huw Edwards' salary during This Morning

Eamonn Holmes jumped in to defend Welsh presenter Huw Edwards during an awkward moment on Friday's This Morning.

The ITV host spoke to Matthew Wright and India Willoughby alongside his wife Ruth Langsford for the daily This Morning's View.

During the segment Eamonn and Ruth asked Matthew and India about their thoughts on a number of headlines in the news, including the fact Radio One has banned the original Pogues Christmas lyrics for Fairytale of New York because its audience may be offended.

However, the talk quickly turned to being "offended" by things in general.

It lead to India to take a swipe at overpaid television presenters, slamming Huw Edwards in particular for being paid thousands to "read an autocue."

She said: "What about Huw Edwards getting £450,000 to read an autocue? I find that offensive. This is why people are starting to switch off from the BBC, they're so out of touch... it's ridiculous."

Quickly jumping in, Eamonn pointed out that Huw does more than just read an autocue and said he was "worth it".

He responded: "I have to defend Huw Edwards. Huw Edwards does more than read an autocue, India, and he does many other programmes as well.

"He gets well paid but I think he's a really good pro and worth it, I say, but there we go."

The exchange was picked up on by viewers, with one writing: "Did India hit a nerve there with the high pay for reading an autocue? Their faces!"

While another added: "You weren't asked for a critique of the BBC, India - you were asked about The Fairytale of New York and them censoring the lyrics"

It comes after the BBC rich list was revealed earlier this year.

The Welsh presenter was in the top five BBC presenters paid the most with a salary of £465,000-£469,999.

This Morning continues week days between 10am and 12:30pm on ITV.
